Suited for tropical and sub-tropical areas of Asia and Africa 
The plant grows wild in shaded areas which are wet or humid, especially in forests in South India.

It is known for their beautiful flowers and foliage and ideal as a garden  plant. 
It is also cultivated as an intercrop with other commercial crops
Rich loamy soil is ideal for the plant.
It can be grown in laterite soil if sufficient organic manures are supplied.
